Joseph Anthony Kiren

Joseph Anthony Kiren left his earthly tent to be welcomed home by Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior on April 27, 2013.  Joseph was born in Youngstown, Ohio on February 11, 1943, the son of the late Joseph L. and Theresa Ciccarelli Kiren.  He leaves behind his wife Anne, son Joseph Colin of Wasilla, AK, and stepson Benjamin Heilman, of Kittanning. He is survived by his brothers William (Susan) Kiren of Greensburg, and John (Karen) Kiren of Vanderbilt, sisters Theresa (Paul) Austin, of Bowdoinham, ME and Frances Lynn (Don) Bartholomew, of Wyano, aunt, Rose Ciccarelli, of Youngstown, OH and many cousins, nephews and nieces.  He graduated from Gateway High School, Monroeville, PA in 1961 and later joined the U. S. Air Force. He was a weapons mechanic assigned to RAF Bentwaters, England with temporary duty assignments at Wheelus AFB, Libya. After Joe was honorably discharged on February 23, 1966, he worked for Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a core builder at its East Pittsburgh location. He became paralyzed in 1972 when his motorcycle was forced off the road near Warren, PA. He became involved with the Tri-State Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America, serving in various offices until hired as the Chapter’s first Executive Director in 1988. He retired from the then renamed Keystone Chapter in 1999. During his tenure with TSPVA/KPVA, he worked enthusiastically to help its members, give presence to the organization, and encourage the establishment of the SCI Clinic at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. He was on the board of Three River’s Center for Independent Living also. We are grateful to the many doctors and personnel at both the VAPHS and the Stokes VA Cleveland SCI Center for the care Joe received during the years he’s been paralyzed.  Joe came out of retirement to work for Sam’s Club in Monroeville until he retired again in July, 2012. Joe attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK and Geneva College in Pittsburgh, pursuing a degree in Human Resource Management. He was a dedicated volunteer, not just for PVA and TRICL but also as a teacher’s aide and board member for Christian Fellowship Academy, as a prayer counselor for the 700 Club and CTVN, and performed in the music ministry at Cornerstone Ministries.  We are grateful for the support we’ve had from our family and friends. In the past few years we’ve relied on the strong support and friendship of our fellow Christ-followers at Monroeville Assembly of God. Without them, this would have been a very lonely journey. May God continue to bless and keep them. Family and friends will be received from 5-9 PM on Wednesday in the Monroeville Assembly of God Church 4561 Old William Penn Highway, Monroeville.  Funeral services will be at the church on Thursday at 11:30 AM.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth Street, NW, Washington DC 20006-3517.  The John M.
